Doctors urged to step up testing of athletes to reduce heart attacks
GENEVA — The IOC wants doctors to better monitor athletes to reduce fatal heart attacks during competition.
The IOC medical commission recommended that all athletes under 35 be questioned about their medical and family history. The aim is to diagnose possible abnormalities that could cause heart attacks.
“We do not want to see athletes dying,” said Dr. Patrick Schamasch, medical director of the International Olympic committee.
